Ce sont des personnes sélectionnées et formées qui se présentent comme des clients réels ou potentiels, qui évaluent chaque phase de leur contact (service clientèle) avec une certaine société. Les clients mystères sont aussi appelés consommateurs mystères, clients virtuels, clients qualifiés, hôtes anonymes, acheteurs secrets, acheteurs test, acheteurs virtuels, faux clients, les acheteurs d’essai, les appelants mystère, les observateurs mystérieux, etc.
