DR Congo: 84% of Congolese have access to internet through mobile device, according to Target research

Four hundred and fifty nine Congolese panel users responded within a period of two months to an online questionnaire as regards their Internet habits. This research full of information shows that 84% of internet users are consulting internet using a mobile device (Smartphone or tablet). 29% of respondents affirmed to consult internet via laptop computer or desktop computer at a cybercafé, while 21% consults internet through desktop computer or laptop at the office.

For Serge MUMBU, Managing Director of Target SARL, figures on the use of mobile internet can be interesting for internet access providers or websites’ managers in the sense that it allows them to assess the real impact of internet towards different categories of population (men, women young people, adults, active as well as none active people…), yet also at the level of main cities of DR Congo (Kinshasa, Matadi, Mbuji Mayi, Kisangani, Goma, Bukavu and Lubumbashi). Target team is willing to organize specific workshops with internet access providers or websites’ managers that would be interested in them, in order to come up with the best strategies for increase of market shares and/or positioning in the Congolese market.

Thus, about 6 participants over 10 do affirm to use internet every day. A figure that is supported when we consider that the majority of internet users use their mobile phone and purchase credit to access internet.

Amongst all respondents’ categories, men whose ages vary between 25 and 35 years old remain the biggest internet users.

If Congolese people are more and more present online, there are two things that interest them the least: listening to music online (6%), and watching movies (11%). Target research shows what the most attractive things for internet users are and how web actors can take advantage of this interest.

Besides, Panel users mentioned four Congolese operators that provide them with internet access: Airtel, Orange, Tigo and Vodacom. The research reveals the assessment they carry out as regards connection quality of each operator.

Facebook (91%) and WhatsApp (63%) are the most used applications by internet users. WhatsApp is mostly attracting women (68%). While men are more present on Facebook (96%) and ahead of women with (86%).

Opera Mini (61%) and Firefox (32%) are internet browsers mostly appreciated by panel users.
