Amongst every year December and January news, there is publication of celebrities having most marked the year. Some organizations put in place a specialists’ panel in order to designate a man or woman of the year while others are investigating public opinion through online or telephone voting; sometimes both mode of designation (appointment of specialists’ panel and public opinion) are used with a view to identify the most influential celebrities of the year.
For TARGET agency, we conducted a public opinion survey amongst a representative sample of Kinshasa people (DR Congo capital). Thousand people have been surveyed from 11 to 13 January 2013 in line with the method of quotas for age, sex and place of residence.
Almost 70% of surveyed people designated the Congolese or foreign celebrity that most marked them in 2012 explaining the main reason of their choice. Over the 28 celebrities that have been given the minimum score of 1%, we have the Argentinean soccer player Lionel Messi that is positioned at the head of the list with 8% followed by the Congolese musicians Koffi Olomide and Werrason with each 5%, just before Mike Kalambayi and Fally Ipupa (respectively 4%). Then we have both heads of Congolese Government (the Congolese President Joseph Kabila and the Prime Minister Matata Ponyo) with a score of 3% ex aequo with the Christian musician Patrice Ngoy Musoko and the American President Barack Obama.
Lionel Messi was mostly designated by men (15%), young men from 12 to 24 years old (12%) and inhabitants of Mont-Amba district (10%) and Tshangu district (9%) mainly due to his various records of 2012 (3 consecutive Ballon d’Or Awards, outstanding numbers of goals scored in 2012 especially with his club FC Barcelona).
The Musicians Koffi Olomide and Mike Kalambayi get their best scores from women (respectively 6% and 7%) while Werrason is more designated by men (6%), young men from 25 to 34 years old (7%) and non-active (6%). Koffi Olomide marked the spirits of certain class of Kinshasa people with his concerts’ concept (Koffi Chante...“meaning Koffi sings”) and the success of his album ABRACADABRA. The choice of Mike Kalambayi is mainly due to the quality of his last album DANSTA PRESENCE VOLUME 2 while according to surveyed people, Werrason has once again confirmed in 2012 his remarkable popularity in Kinshasa with concerts (especially at FIKIN) attracting very significant number of fans as well as putting them in turmoil during the launching of his last maxi-single SATELLITE + 2.
The musician and artist Fally Ipupa gotten his highest score from young people of 12-17 years old (8%). For surveyed Kinshasa people; Fally Ipupa is the artist that most brought proud to Congolese people abroad thanks to featuring with artists such as Flavour (Nigeria), Lynnsha (France) and DJ Arafat ( Ivory Cost) and the participation of Ghanaian actress Nadia Buari in the video clip of his song FRENCH KISS.
The Congolese President Joseph Kabila has gotten his highest score from non-active (6%) while the Prime Minister obtained his best cost from inhabitants of LUKUNGA district (6%). Modernization of Kinshasa infrastructures and success of 14th Francophonie Summit seems to be the main reasons of the Choice of the President Joseph Kabila. On the side of the Prime Minister Matata Ponyo, surveyed people are mentioning payment of the State civil servants or officials through banking service, strictness within government and of macroeconomic framework stability.
Finally let us point out the French President François Hollande at the head of celebrities marking adults of 50 years old and more (5%). He marked the spirits of the class of Kinshasa people mainly due to his victory at Presidential elections against the President Nicolas Sarkozy. It is also the same victory at presidential elections that explains the choice of the American President Barack Obama while the album PASTEUR PATRON is perceived as a great success by Kinshasa people that designated the Christian musician Patrice Ngoy Musoko.
