After the issuance of the research titled “Celebrities preferred by Kinshasa people” in June of this year, Target Agency carried out the same research in Lubumbashi town, the second city of DR Congo and capital of the mining province of Katanga. This research aims at allowing to companies as well as communication agencies to better direct their choices in terms of celebrities, when it comes to directly reach the local people.
Kinshasa is indeed the capital and the most important city of DR Congo; however it would be risky to completely transpose perceptions and opinions of Kinshasa people towards all inhabitants of other towns and cities of the country. In fact, persons that are celebrities at Kinshasa are not necessarily likewise inside the country.
The survey was carried out in Lubumbashi town from 19 to 22 November 2014 and gave to Lubumbashi people the opportunity of stating their opinions on Congolese or foreign celebrities they prefer in the fields of music, drama/movies, sport, advertisements and media.
- MUSIC
Classification of preferred musicians is largely dominated by artists operating in Kinshasa. Two Christian musicians Mike Kalambay (9%) and Athom’s Mbuma (9%) are in the top 3 behind Fally Ipupa (12%). As a matter of fact these three musicians have conquered Lubumbashi people hearts through their last opus which are currently in the market (Power of Fally Ipupa, Dans ta présence (In your presence) Vol.2 of Mike Kalambay and Le Culte (The Worship) of Athom’s Mbuma). The position of these two Christian musicians is also justified by the fact that they are regularly travelling to Lubumbashi for many productions in conference rooms, churches and public places (Bâtiment du 30 JUIN, La poste…). Only three artists that are locally operating have been mentioned by the respondents especially the two rappers RJ Kanyera and Oxygène (respectively 2% each) as well as the Christian musician Mardochée Kashala (1%).
- DRAMA/MOVIES
Preferences of Lubumbashi people are mostly focus on local artists. Serge Manseba (36%), drama actor of about thirty years old, who is mostly liked due his look (always dressed in red during his performances) and his TV jokes are broadcasted on NYOTA TV. He is followed by Mufwankolo (16%), an old actor whose drama performances are broadcasted on Mwangaza TV and he has been attracting the attention of Lubumbashi people since years. Let’s note at this stage the good score of British Canadian Kiefer Sutherland a.k.a. “Jack Bauer” (4%), the main actor of 24 HOUR CHRONO of which the eighth season is being broadcasted each evening on Mwangaza TV during this last month.
- SPORTS
Except the American wrestlers John Cena and Randy Orton as well as the basketball player Tony Parker, the classification has only soccer players. The former and current players of local club T.P Mazembe are majorly included in this latter with the former captain Trésor Mputu (28%) at the Top. This latter keeps on taking advantage of Lubumbashi people attention thanks to good performances during the time he spent playing in that team but also due to his “Foundation Trésor Mputu” that is taking care of children at loose ends in Lubumbashi town. Trésor Mputu in front of Cristiano Ronaldo (13%) and Lionel Messi (12%) who also got many fans in copper capital: people of Lubumbashi are very fond of international soccer play and do appreciate to their right worth performances of these two stars especially during soccer games of Spanish championship (LIGA) and UEFA championship League.
Lubumbashi people are largely attracted by advertisements that have jokes scenes; it is the cause of highest presence of jokes’ actors in the classification. It is the jokes’ actor from Kinshasa Fiston Saï Sai that is coming to the top with 31%, following by two local artists, Nzembela (22%) and Serge Manseba (16%). The Argentina soccer player Lionel Messi, who is the only foreign star mentioned (1%).

It is mostly presenters of local TV programmes with strong audience that are mentioned as “preferred” by Lubumbashi people. The first position is hold by Vital Sunzu (13%), whose programme “Jokes and Music” (Mwangaza TV), devoted to jokes, advises and music, is captivating the attention of people. It is also appreciated because it is brightening up evenings in the city with jokes. Patrick Kapend, the second in the classification with 9%, is also taking advantage of great attention granted to his TV programme “Etoile du Berger” (NYOTA TV), which is broadcasting Nigerian movies by translating them in French and Swahili.
