A Target Research on perception of HIV in DR Congo

On the occasion of the day of fight against HIV, Target agency published results of a survey conducted within twenty – six provinces’ administrative centers of DR Congo. The two objectives were to assess the state of consideration of risk that HIV/AIDS represents and select means of prevention to be considered as the most effective. This is just a Target contribution in fighting against AIDS in DR Congo by providing recent and reliable statistics on perception of Congolese people on this pandemic.

It results from this study that almost the totality of surveys consider HIV/AIDS as a threat and even as very high level threat (77%). Even if the awareness of danger that AIDS represents can be felt throughout the country, three provinces are holding the head position in terms of country highest apprehension rate: Kinshasa (88%), Equateur (80%) and Katanga (79%).

In terms of prevention means, faithfulness holds for 38% of people as the most effective mean of prevention. It is followed by abstinence 28% and the use of condoms 26%.

“This study allows organizations of fights against AIDS to first of all be aware of the fact that work of awareness campaign is effective in DR Congo within provinces administrative centers according to study results. Then, the study allows them seeing future challenges for awareness campaign especially at the level of Kongo Central, Bandundu and Equateur provinces whereas results of awareness as regards AIDS threat and/or information related to means if fight are relatively weak. Some even most relevant means should be implemented by the public power to fight against AIDS, especially towards young people and in rural areas that have not been considered by the study”, affirmed Serge General Manager of Target.

In the framework of this study, 1000 people (men and women of 18 to 65 years old and above) have been interviewed from November 1st to 15th, 2016 in line with method of quota per age, gender and residence municipality.
