DR Congo: Democracy rhymes with human rights and freedom of expression, according to Target research
What is Congolese people opinion on Democracy and good governance? These both topics have been the subject of Target quantitative research carried out from April 24th to August 15th, 2016 through it online panel towards respondents living in seven cities of DR Congo.
Three main results are coming out of this research
1. According to the vast majority of Congolese respondents, democracy equals compliance with human rights and freedom of expression. For 38% of respondents, democracy rhymes with compliance with human rights while only 35% are talking about freedom of expression. Generally, women (38%) are connecting democracy concept with freedom of expression while men respondents (39%) are more inclined to human rights. Interesting facts to consider in this research, less than 10% of respondents are connecting democracy to notions of equality and voting power.
2. For Congolese people having taken part in this research, good governance is mainly based on compliance with ethics principles in the use of state-owned resources (33%), rational management of public properties (32%) and fight against bribery (21%). Ethics principles are on the top with the highest rate at BUKAVU (40%) and MBUJI – MAYI (41%). Good governance is more referred to rational management of public properties for 42% of respondents at Goma. Women are several (23%) than men (19%) to connect good governance with fight against bribery.
3. The vast majority of Congolese people are favorable to adoption of democracy in African Countries. 69% of respondents do affirm that democracy is a system to be adopted in African Countries: 49% are stating that democracy is critical for Africa development and 20% think that it will favor justice and promote investments.
