8 Congolese people over 10 consult a doctor only in the event of disease, according to a Target SARL research
Target SARL made available to public, results of one of the most first researches entirely achieved online in DR Congo through a representative panel of 459 respondents, during a period of 2 months (from 23 May to 31 July 2015). The research was related to Congolese people behaviors as regards medical care. Internet users of Kinshasa, Matadi, Kisangani, Bukavu, Goma, Mbuji-Mayi and Lubumbashi responded to an online questionnaire.
Over 459 respondents that participated to Target panel, 83% affirmed to consult a doctor only when they get sick. The highest score (92%) has been recorded in the city of Kisangani, that was the capital city of Province Oriental up to the period when the research was still being conducted. Yet conversely, it is the city wherein self-medication rate is the lowest (6%) while Bukavu, in the Eastern part of Democratic Republic of Congo, is ruling at the top of cities wherein inhabitants are medically taking care of themselves without searching for a doctor or pharmacist opinion (17%).
The research also reveals that only 12% of Goma inhabitants and 10% of Kinshasa people are regularly seeing a doctor.
To consult a doctor, 36% of online respondents affirm to go to a health center and 34%, in general hospital of reference. In main the country cities wherein research has been conducted, few people visit medical facilities run by NGOs (4%).
At Sud-Kivu, 59% of respondents consult their doctors in a general hospital, while at Bas-Congo (currently named Kongo-Central), 42% frequent a health center to receive medical care. These are the highest scores within these both categories of the frequented institutions.
Many private and public companies are present in DRC and provide to consumers variety of products and services.
